About the Swiss Franc

The Swiss Franc ↱ has many names in Switzerland, depending on the native language of the region it's used in. In French & Romansh they are called 'Franc', in German 'Franken', and in Italian 'Franco'. The international currency ISO code is CHF, and they are usually referred to as Swiss Franc.

1 Franc is divided into 100 units, which are called 'Rappen' in German, 'Centesimo' in Italian , 'Centime' in French, and 'Rap' in Romansh.

Before Switzerland - or the Helvetic Republic, as it was called at that time - had a uniform currency, each canton and half-canton used their own currency, which added up to over 850 different currencies used before 1798, when the Franc was first introduced. The monetary system was very unorganised and many currencies could only be used in specific regions, and few of them were recognised in other countries.

The Swiss Constitution was renewed in 1848, and it was decided that the federal government was responsible for the issuing of money, creating a single currency for the whole nation. The new Swiss Franc was introduced at a value en par with the French Franc in 1850.

Today, the Swiss Franc is one of the 10 most-traded currencies in the world, with a low inflation rate of 0.9% (2018).

Since July 2019, gambling in Switzerland has been regulated and properly legalised. However, foreign gambling websites are excluded, and it is not permitted that Swiss residents play at foreign online casinos. Operators must have a presence in the country.

The new Gambling Act that came into effect states that land-based operators in the country are also allowed to offer online casino games to residents of Switzerland. This means that, although choice is more limited for the players, that they have some protection and regulation from within their own country.

This page is aimed at players outside of Switzerland, who wish to spend Swiss Franc at online casinos, as we don't recommend breaking any local laws.

Popular payment options for players with Swiss Franc

Online casinos offer many different payment options, that vary with operators and their payment processors. Depending on your country of residence you'll be presented with different options that you can use to deposit and withdraw money at casinos.

Credit cards like Visa or Mastercard are commonly accepted, but there are also many other options available. For example, and e-wallet allow you to make fast deposits and withdrawals, and there are many wallets that support CHF payments, including Neteller, Payz, Skrill, MiFinity and Jeton.

Another option are instant banking methods, and commonly accepted are for example Sofort, Trustly, Rapid Transfer, and Klarna.

Many casinos also accept voucher payments for deposits, including for example Paysafecard or Astropay.

If you have a specific payment method in mind that you wish to use at the casino, take a look at our payments overview to find more casino payment options.

Safety of online gambling for players with Swiss Franc

Online gambling can be a safe and fun activity, but you need to keep a few things in mind when you choose the casino. One of the most important things is the license of the casino, as it will give you an indication of how regulated the operator is.

The casinos licensed by a regulator in Europe, like for example Malta or the UK have to follow stricter regulations than a casino licensed in Curacao. But in any case it is also important to play at trusted casinos, as there are black sheep anywhere, and it is important to play at a reputable casino with a good track record of being reliable, especially when it comes to payments.

Casinos recommended on Casinodaemon.com have a good reputation with their players in general, they have a valid license, and are not known to cheat the players.

Swiss Franc FAQ

Swiss Franc are not among the commonly accepted currencies at online casinos, and you might have chosen a different operator, who doesn't accept CHF. In this case, you will be able to select a different currency, or the casino were pre-select it for you, based on your location.

Most casinos accept Euro and US Dollar as the main account currency, but unless you have funds in an account in that currency, you can expect to pay conversion fees. These fees are often hidden in the exchange rate of the currency, and they can range from between 1% up to 5% of the exchange amount. To avoid conversion fees, we recommend playing at an online casino that supports your preferred currency.

Whether or not you qualify for a online casino bonus depends on your country of residence, and if the casino offers players from your country casino bonus. If this is the case, you should also be able to claim the bonus when you make your deposit with Swiss Franc. If the bonus amount shown in a different currency, it will be automatically converted.

As with all casino bonuses, we recommend reading the terms and conditions carefully before playing with bonus money, and make yourself familiar with the bonus wagering requirements and other limitations of playing with bonus money.

If you are registering at a casino that allows Swiss Franc to be selected as the main account currency, you can make deposits and withdrawals with CHF. It is not a commonly accepted currency at casinos, so your choice of casinos is more limited, but there are a few trustworthy operators that accept your currency. You can find them on this page, including detailed reviews for each casino.
