About the Bulgarian Lev

The Bulgarian lev is the official currency of the country Bulgaria. The word 'lev' means 'lion' in archaic Bulgarian, and the currency was introduced in 1881. After Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007, the country considered adopting the euro as their national currency, but put these plans on hold after the 2008 financial crisis.
