UK Gambling Commission Will Ban Use of Credit Cards for Gambling in April 2020

The UK Gambling Commission is one of the toughest regulators for gambling activities in the world, with a strong focus on player protection, anti-money laundering provisions and player protection, including the prevention of compulsive gambling and other security measures, including self-exclusion.  

After the review of online gambling and social responsibility measures, they have now announced, that from the 14th of April 2020, UK-licensed online gambling operators will be no longer allowed to accept credit card payments from their players.

800,000 players who use credit cards for gambling

The ban aims to protect problem gamblers who use credit limit to gamble. Using borrowed money to play casino games in itself poses a problem, so this measure aims to protect people from spending money they don't have.

According to UK Finance, there are 800,000 people of the 24 million gamblers in the UK, who use credit cards to pay for their gambling activities. Of these, 22% are classed as problem gamblers, who require more protection from harm.

Some players who were unable to control their spending on gambling, accumulated tens of thousands of pounds in credit card debt.

Unfortunately, the ban will also affect players who gamble responsibly with their credit cards, but the measure is for the greater good, and to protect everyone. Ultimately, it's part of a greater effort to curb problem gambling and make it safer for punters.
