The Return To Player (RTP) - Slot Payout Rates Explained

The RTP is an important number that you need to take a look at when you're playing an online slot for real money. When you play a slot machine you should know that every slot has an average return to Player (RTP) percentage. This figure shows how much the slot theoretically pays back to the players.

For example, let us take a slot with an RTP of 93%. This means that the slot will pay out 93 Euros for every 100 Euros that have been played. The remaining 7 Euros are kept by the casino, and they what the casino keeps for operating the slot.

However, when you play slot machines and wager 100 Euros, it doesn't mean that you will get 93 Euros back - the RTP relates to an overall average of millions of rounds, and the percentage is calculated over a very long period of time.

The slot machines have different slot variances (volatility), which is the payout frequency and risk factor, and this affects how often the slot pays out, and how much it pays out. The slot variance does not affect the overall payout percentage.

Even if you play a few rounds and don't win all your money back, it is likely that you will win some money back. However, a lot of the money will be paid out in the form of a larger jackpot.

Every player does theoretically have the chance to win a jackpot or larger amount with just one spin. This means that slot machines a lot like lotto: many players play, and one or more can get a larger win, some will win medium or smaller amounts, and other players will leave empty-handed.

Online slots with a high RTP

Most online slots these days have an RTP of around 96%, but this varies greatly with developers, and there are some who average 94% in their games. Find here some suggestions of online slots that have a higher than average RTP, but keep in mind, the outcome of the games also depends on the volatility of the game, so even it the RTP is high, you still might play a risky game and loose your money.

Are land-based or online slots more favourable to the player?

Hard Rock Hotel

The payout percentage of slot machines in land-based casinos is set when they are built at the factory. Sometimes the organisation acquiring them has then option to change the RTP through the software.

The RTP of online slots is set by the developer or the operator. Land-based casinos usually have a much lower RTP than online casinos, and it is quite likely that the RTP is between 70 and 80%.

The RTP in online casinos is usually above 90%. This shows that playing online slots is much more favourable for the player, as it is more likely to win at the slot.

The reason why the online operators can do this is the lower cost of operation. Since they don't have to rent large commercial casino premises or employ many casino employees, they can give back their savings to the player, and offer them a higher payout.

How do I find out the RTP of a slot

Nowadays, most online slot developers publish their RTP in the information tab of the slot, it may also be part of the requirements from the regulatory body, depending on their license.

Some online casinos also publish the RTP of their slots, but it is not the norm. It most certainly does not mean that you have better chances of winning at a slot if the operator reveals the RTP.

When playing at a trustworthy and licensed casino the slot machines will be regularly tested for fairness. Even if you don't know the exact RTP of a slot machine, you can be certain that the game is fair and that you will not be cheated out of your money.

Keep in mind to only play at licensed casinos, as it may happen that the RTP in unlicensed casinos has been tampered with, which would mean that you will never win any money, and most likely lose it all.

All the casinos presented on CasinoDaemon.com have a licence and they are regularly tested for fairness - you can be certain to be in good hands with these operators.

Regarding land-based slot machines... you won't know the RTP, it's usually not published, but you can be quite certain that it's lower than the same game in its online version - provided the developer offers their land-based games also as an online version.

RTP stands for return to player, which is the theoretical value of how much a slot machine pays out to the players over millions or billions of spins.

The RTP of the game is the theoretical return of how much the slot pays out over millions of billions of rounds. For example, if the RTP is set to 96%, the game will pay out 96% on average over millions of rounds, and the remaining 4% will go to the game developer and casino offering the game. A more detailed explanation about the RTP is available in this article.

In most cases, the RTP of the slot that you can find in a land-based casino is not the same as that of an online game. Online slots usually have a higher return to player rate than their land-based counterparts - even it it's the same game!

Reason for this is that the operating costs of an online casino is much lower than cost of operation of a land-based establishment, or the cost to operate a slot in a pub.

There are some online slots with a higher than average RTP, like for example Jackpot 6000, Blood Suckers, Sugar Pop and Jack Hammer 2. You can find more suggestions for slots with a high RTP on this page.

The return to player rate doesn't directly affect your chances of winning at a game. The general risk of the game is determined by the volatility - the risk of the game. However, if the game has a very low RTP, it is a lot more difficult to win overall, as the house edge would be much higher, i.e. the share that the casino and operators keep.

Depending on where the casino game developer is licensed, they will publish the return to player somewhere in the information of the game. Some regulators require disclosure of the RTP, but it depends on the jurisdiction. Most online slot developers disclose the RTP of each game, which makes them more transparent for the player.
