About the Chilean Peso

The Republic of Chile uses the peso as their official currency. The Chilean peso ↱ uses the ISO code CLP. The currency symbol is the $ sign, and to distinguish the Chilean peso from other currencies that use the $ symbol, it's often written as CLP$.

One peso is subdivided into 100 centavos, but no centavos coins are available any more, due to the low value of a centavo. The lowest denominated coins are the 1 and 5 peso coin, but their manufacture has been discontinued.

The first peso was introduced in Chile in 1817, and it was used until 1960 when it was replaced with the Chilean escudo. The escudo was used until 1975, after which the second peso was introduced, and it's still used today.
